Air Compressor Purchasing Guide

Posted by editor on Apr 1, 2009 in websites

An air compressor is a valuable piece of equipment for operating power tools. They are better in terms of efficiency and are easier on you. The type you need depends on the tools you will be using. Good choices include a Copeland compressor, Husky air compressors or Quincy compressors.

Factors to Consider in an Air Compressor
Consider how often you will use air compressors and how it will be used. What tools will you be using and how much power will be needed to operate them? Some tools, like nail guns, don’t need high volume compressor. Others, such as drills or sanders do need high volume because they require steady air flow.

Set a budget for your purchase. The price for these machines varies significantly from brand to brand. Buying a used compressor is one way to make your budget stretch further.

The style of the pump is another consideration. The most common are direct drive and belt drive. Direct drive pumps will last up to five hundred hours. These take up less room in your workshop. They are well suited for moderate uses. Another benefit of these is that no oil changes are needed. Belt drive pumps require oil changes every five hundred hours and will last for about fifteen hundred hours. These are good for do it yourself as well as professional use.

Consider the power of the compressor. Consider both the horsepower and pound per square inch (PSI) pressure. Make sure it is more powerful than the most powerful tool you will be using. Check your tools before purchasing the compressor.

The tank size is another important consideration. These come in sizes from two to one hundred gallons. The more you will use the equipment, the larger the tank you will need. Always go a little larger than you think you will need. This will ensure that you can get the optimum use from the compressor.
Finding an Affordable Air Compressor
Shop around before purchasing air compressor systems. Compare brands and read reviews on the internet. Compare the machines and features of each. Similar machines can differ by hundreds of dollars.

Consider a reconditioned machine. In these, the machines have been completely inspected. Worn or damaged air compressor parts are replaced. Many of these have gotten very little use and are in nearly new condition. You can find equipment at a considerable savings. Look for a model with a one year warranty to be sure you are getting a quality product.

Consider shopping online. Often, the prices are considerably less than in some stores. Many ship straight from the factory, saving retail mark up. This savings can be significant. In many cases, you won’t need to pay sales tax on the equipment, which can add up. Many sites offer free shipping on these purchases, so it won’t cost any additional money for shipping.

Headphones Make The Grade

Posted by editor on Feb 1, 2009 in websites

Too often the weakest link in a portable audio setup is the headphones

Many portable music enthusiasts spend a great deal of money trying to improve on the quality of their music by buying the highest quality CD players, MP3 players, stereos, and speakers. Then they spend most of their time listening to their portable audio devices through the cheap headphones that came with the devices or something they picked up at the local discount store. Good headphones should be the primary concern in most cases where portable audio quality is a primary consideration.

The cost of headphones

The good news is that great quality from headphones is much less expensive than getting great quality from the other audio components. A good set of headphones will often provide you with a better sound experience than a very expensive set of speakers. So if you’re going to spend for the best audio quality, the primary concern should be on purchasing great headphones.

Many people make the mistake of not even buying headphones at all. Almost all portable audio devices now come with their own little headphones. In most cases these are not even brand name headphones, but rather mass manufactured headphones that have a market value between $1 and $10. Even when they are brand name headphones, they are often at the bottom of that brand’s product line. Using these headphones greatly compromises the sound quality of the music you listen to on a daily basis. So as long as you’re going to invest in a portable audio player with all of the features you want, invest in a good set of headphones as well.

Headphones and location

Primarily we use headphones so that we can listen to music wherever we go without rudely imposing our music preferences on those around us. Think about the various places where you listen to music and where you would like to listen to music. How much better does great sounding music make you feel about each of those places? If you’re going to take your music with you, make it great.

These are not your grandpa’s headphones

Headphones were once big metal, wood, and then plastic speaker systems that hung on giant headgear on top of your ears. Over time they got smaller, became more comfortable, and provided better sound. This trend in headphones continues today. While earpieces have been available for a few decades now, the moderately priced earpieces we have now provide sound quality that only the best speaker systems of the past could compete with today. But that doesn’t mean you should settle. If you can have the sound of a concert hall, why settle for the sound of bad headphones? Take a little time and spend a little money to make sure you get a great sound experience from your portable audio devices with a great set of headphones.

Camcorder Battery

Posted by editor on Jan 1, 2009 in websites

Camcorders have come a long way from the big bulky machines that required an advanced degree to operate them. Now camcorders make you think of a hand held trendy accessory that can easily be brought to any event to capture the moment. As with all handheld appliances, the element that keeps them going is the battery. For every brand of camcorder, there is a specific type of battery and a varying amount of battery life.

For each brand and model of camcorder, there is a specific battery designed for that camcorder by the manufacturer. In order to purchase additional batteries, you must know the make and model number, as brands like Sony have dozens of models of camcorders.

Camcorders typically use NiCD or NiMH batteries. Newer Lithium Ion batteries are on the market for camcorders as well. They are more ideal for camcorders because they must run multiple applications which uses lots of battery power. To accommodate this, traditional NiCD and NiMH batteries can be extremely large and heavy, whereas Li-Ion batteries weigh much less and provide the same amount of power.

Depending on the type of battery, whether it be NiCD, NiMH, or the new Li-Ion battery, the type of camcorder charger needed will be very different. All these batteries use different technologies and therefore charge using different technologies. Many camcorder charger manufactures have helped to overcome this problem by creating universal chargers that charge all types of batteries in one docking station. Another option is rapid chargers, which charge batteries in a fraction of the time it takes traditional chargers. For convenience, some chargers are also equipped with a battery tester to measure the battery and avoid over charging.

Camcorders use lots of battery power, so it is important to consider how it will be used before purchasing a camcorder battery. Remember to take into account weight and frequency of use to get the most for your money.

Home Electronics: How to Find Hot Deals

Posted by editor on Dec 1, 2008 in websites

On wish lists around the country, home electronics have bypassed traditional favorites like clothes, lingerie, and jewelry as the most coveted items. But whether you’re buying home electronics for yourself and your family, or as a gift, the burning question is always: Where do I find hot deals?

After all, why pay premium prices for LCD flat screen TVs, an iPod, a digital camera, or a cell phone when you can get hot deals at a fraction of the cost? While it’s true that the prices for all home electronics are trending downward, it pays to shop around for the best possible prices before you make a purchase.

LCD Flat Screen TVs: Although LCD flat screen TVs for home entertainment systems are massive and relatively expensive, portable LCD flat screen TVs are ultimately affordable – especially when you can find hot deals and discount prices. For example, a seven-inch LCD flat screen TV with a full channel VHF/UHF receiver, built-in speakers, 1440 x 234 resolution and an active matrix display, a detachable and mountable stand, and A/V input jacks might list for $249.99. You can, however, find it for $144.29, a savings of over 42 percent.

iPod: Every family needs at least one iPod, and although the iPod Shuffle lists for $179.99, there are places where you can get hot deals and purchase an iPod shuffle for $109.43, or a discount of 39 percent. Likewise, you can save over 27 percent on an iPod Nano, and pay only $289.77. If you’re willing to buy a refurbished model, you can get it even cheaper.

Digital Camera: Let’s face it: film cameras are so twentieth century. There’s no need to bother with bulky camera equipment and film and developing costs when you can snap all the pictures you want with a digital camera. And, there’s truly a digital camera for every budget, with prices ranging from $100 to $10,000 and more. But when you look for hot deals, you can get a lot more camera for your money. If your budget is $150, for example, you can probably find a digital camera that retails for $299, but that is discounted almost 50 percent. Again, if you are willing to buy a refurbished digital camera, the savings can be even greater.

Cell Phone: Everyone in the family needs a cell phone, so it only makes sense to look for hot deals on cell phones. If you buy every family member the same cell phone (or the same cell phone in a variety of colors), you can usually find a calling plan that is extremely cost effective.

There’s no question that hot deals on home electronics – and even electronics that double as a car accessory – are out there. Your best bet is to look for an online discount source. Because online stores don’t have to pay the overhead that brick-and-mortar stores have to pay, they usually offer lower prices. Online stores also move a lot of inventory, so their hot deals usually surpass those of even the electronics megastores. Always comparison shop, but remember that for the best hot deals, let your mouse do the clicking.

Dyson D15 Vacuum Cleaner

Posted by editor on Nov 1, 2008 in websites

The Dyson DC15 is a great vacuum to hit the market, as it is the first and only vacuum cleaner to feature the very unique ball. Even though robotic vacuum cleaners are becoming the most popular types of vacuum cleaners, the DC15 is ideal for housewives who want a traditional vacuum cleaner with a twist. The Dyson DC15 upright vacuum has a large yellow ball that will allow the vacuum to pivot and roll with the greatest of ease. You can simply turn your wrist and the vacuum cleaner will change its direction. The ability is something that is commonly associated with canister style vacuum cleaners. It also offers quite an interesting filtration system. No matter what you may think or hear, Dyson vacuums don’t use filters in the way that most vacuum cleaners do. The air and dirt are sucked into the container where the outer cyclone removes large particles such as food, hair, and even fibers. The air will then move into the shroud and inner cyclone where it is rotated with a higher velocity to drop fine particles of dust out of the air.

From the inner cyclone, the air will move about through a washable inner foam pre filter where a majority of the particles will remain trapped. This feature helps the DC15 to keep dirt and debris trapped inside and out of the motor. The last step in the system after moving through the motor is the trip through the final HEPA filter. The DC15 has a very strict filter system, which will prevent 99.9% of bacteria and mold from getting to your home. The vacuum will suck it up and keep it inside of the vacuum where it belongs. Even though they aren’t very well known, Dyson has been around for many years. They aren’t as popular or as well known as the bigger companies such as Hoover, although they offer you great quality and performance with their vacuum cleaners. Unlike Hoover, Dyson works to improve on their own products as well as the competition with each product they release.

The Dyson DC15 is also known for its suction power and attachments as well. With the ball assembly, using attachments are a breeze. The only problem you may have, is getting the hang of things. The attachment wand is stored inside of the handle of the vacuum and is always attached. To use it, you lock the handle in the upright position then push a button on the front of the handle that will allow you to telescope the wand for use.

Flashlight Buying Guide

Posted by editor on Oct 1, 2008 in websites

Gone are the days when buying a flashlight meant one would automatically seek out Maglite. Whilst recognising the impact and unprecedented success of the Maglite design, LED, HID (High Intensity Discharge) and Xenon technology along with ultra strong casing materials means that the flashlight has evolved to a state where the more powerful the beam does not necessarily mean the larger the flashlight.

When seeking out high performance, reasonably priced lighting tools it is easy to become swamped by the amount of brands on the market. Flashlight technology at the beginning of the 21st century offers a baffling variation of bulb type, body material, body size, power source and price range. This guide is a brief overview of the salient points worth consideration when buying any quality flashlight.

In the same way that feet measure length so lumens measure brightness. The higher the Lumen count the brighter and further the beam will show. Occasionally you may find brightness levels measured in Candlepower or Candelas, this describes a unit of light at source. One Candlepower/Candela is equal to 12.57 Lumens.

Perhaps the most significant breakthrough in lighting technology was the L.E.D. (Light Emitting Diode). The L.E.D. produces light on a molecular level as distinct from a normal bulb, which heats a filament therefore using more energy to produce less light. As a result an L.E.D. will last a lifetime and dramatically lengthen the life of a battery. They do, however, vary in purity. Like diamonds, at the point of production some produce clean white light whereas others have a very slight blue, violet or green tint.

Xenon Lights produce a broad spectrum of light (including infrared) and can be made to have a high maximum lumen output by the inclusion of Xenon gas in the bulb thus enabling light to be produced at a higher pressure, but they are comparatively less efficient users of power. H.I.D technology (High Intensity Discharge) uses a Xenon bulb slightly differently with the addition of a tubular outer bulb and an inner arc tube with a cerium-doped quartz partition in the bulb to block out most ultraviolet. HID torches have lumen output of approximately 500-1000. Lighting technology could be described as a battle between light and heat, as the energy to produce the heat detracts from that which produces the light. The undoubted master is the LED. It makes light without the need to heat a filament, thus lengthening bulb and battery life. However the power from a Xenon bulb can be astoundingly bright yet harder on the batteries.

Casing material has progressed so far as to be almost indestructible if dropped and virtually water resistant in very wet conditions. A good, quality flashlight will invariably have an Aerospace grade aluminium body and a rugged construction and design.

Manufacturers vary in quality and specialism. Surefire have a quality range of Xenon and LEDs with a comprehensive range of accessories. Ledwave produce excellent, powerful and reasonably priced LED and Xenon lights. Nextorch can boast the extraordinary Saint, capable of producing a massive 450 lumens, plus a range of ingeniously, versatile LED, Xenon and rechargeable torches.

Navigating the labyrinth of flashlight production is tricky and ultimately dependant on what job will be asked of it. Lumen output to size ratio, tough hardwearing casing material and bulb / battery life are essential elements to take into consideration when choosing a lighting tool to last and perform over time.

Consumer Electronics Items

Posted by editor on Oct 1, 2008 in websites

Introduction:

The daily use of electronic equipments are known as consumer electronics and includes TV, telephone, DVD, CD, PC, laptop etc. These equipments are manufactured throughout the world. With the advancement in electronic engineering at a continuous pace, a number of new variety electronics items flood into the market every year and the cost the existing products reduces continuously and it is one of the biggest advantage of consumer electronics industry.

Electronic waste is one of the problems associated with these electronic item and many manufacturers are now planning to deal with these waste.

Semiconductor:

All electronic devices use semiconductors and without these semiconductors none of the electronic device is complete. Semiconductor behaves like an insulator at absolute zero (-273 degree centigrade) and can be distinguished from conductor that at this temperature the outermost filled electron energy band is completely filled in a semiconductor compare to the conductor in which the band is partially filled.

At room temperature semiconductor show a very small electrical conductivity much lower than that of conductor.

Doping in semiconductor:

Most common semiconductors used for electronic devices are silicon and germanium. Although some other conductors such as iridium phosphide, gallium arsenide and mercury cadmium telluride are also used.

A pure semiconductor also known as intrinsic semiconductor, when doped with electron rich element e.g. arsenic or electron deficient element e.g. boron in very small quantity, its conductivity increases and the resultant conductor is known as extrinsic conductor. My doping arsenic (electron rich) and boron (electron deficient) in silicon, we get n-type (negative type) and p-type (positive type) semiconductor devices.

We may create a p-n junction by doping different element in different region of semiconductor and the device is known as diode. Similarly we can create p-n-p or n-p-n junctions and the device is known as triodes.

Electronic Devices

(a) Television:
It is a device by which we can receive moving pictures and sounds over a distance. The whole transmission and receiver systems require the following inputs.
1.Camera for live images or flying spot scanner for transmission of films and sound source.

2.Transmitters for transmitting both images and sounds.

3.Receiver systems for receiving these signals.

4.Display device, which is either CRT, Rear projection, LCD or plasma. To display the signal in the forms of images and sounds.

(b) Telephone:

It is the device for communicating by which two persons can send and receive sound signals over a distance. The system requires the following inputs.

1.The telephone equipment, which converts sound signals to electrical signals and electrical signals to sound signals.

2.Central exchange from where the subscribers are interconnected.

3.Wiring for connecting all the subscribers.

(c) Calculators:

It is a device used for carry out various mathematical calculations. The input required for calculator are as given below.

1.Power source (battery or solar panel).

2.Display device (LED or LCD)

3.Keypad containing all functions and numbers.

4.All electronic circuit devices.

Electronic Waste:

These are the waste electronic devices and if properly utilized may be valuable secondary raw material source for various electronic equipments and if thrown out may act as toxic due to presence of various toxic materials including lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic etc. uncontrolled burning of these materials may also cause environmental problems.

Electronic waste is sometimes illegally sent to other countries for processing. However, due to complexity and difficulties in recycling, e-waste will remain an issue for the coming days.

Be free with wireless speakers

Posted by editor on Sep 1, 2008 in websites

Wireless speakers give you the freedom to move your music to where you want it to be without the hassles of cables. Planning to have a party outside? Don’t move your whole entertainment system outside while you can make use of outdoor wireless speakers which can move right along with the party.
Want to have hi-fi quality sound through your laptop computer? Why should you be tied to wires while using a portable computer? Make use of wireless speakers to give you the freedom to work or play on your computer where you want to, while having the high fidelity sound you deserve. Here are a few examples of how you can use wireless speakers to improve your way of living.

• Listen to your favorite music collection while taking a bath.
• Have a BBQ or party outside without having to move your whole stereo system.
• You can store all your favorite music on your computer and listen to it anywhere in your home.
• Listen to music while working in the garden.
• When your computer is doing certain time consuming tasks, have it play a sound when it is done with the task or when there is an error and have your wireless speaker notify you while you are lying next to the pool.
• Get the perfect surround sound effect by having the freedom to move the speakers to exactly the right spots without getting tangled in wires.
• Let your computer notify you of upcoming tasks or appointments by playing a sound through your outdoor wireless speakers, while you are washing your car.
• Let your wireless speaker notify you discretely of intruders by connecting it to your alarm system.
• Use you wireless speakers as a portable intercom system.

There are however a few things you need to watch out for when shopping for wireless speakers. Some are listed here:

Interference
Some wireless speakers may interfere with other wireless devices in your house like cordless phones. A good wireless speaker system will allow you to tune it to a different frequency to overcome these interferences.

Battery life
Battery life is not always too great on wireless speakers, as it consumes power to drive the speakers, internal amplifier and RF receiver. So, if you want to use your wireless speakers for extended periods of time, it may be wise to make use of the AC power adaptor. Now this may not always be practical – the whole idea of wireless speakers is to get rid of the wires. Rechargeable batteries might be the answer and some of the models even come with rechargeable batteries -something to consider when you need total freedom, even from power outlets.

Range
Most wireless speakers can work fine within a range of 150 to 300 feet from the transmitter. (Which would be located at the source of sound i.e. your hi-fi or computer) The RF frequency is high enough for it to work through walls and furniture. You do not need a line of sight, but bear in mind that obstacles weakens the signal, and the more obstacles between the transmitter and receiver, the shorter the range will become.

Weatherproof
Outdoor wireless speakers are claimed to be weatherproof, but if you do not need to use your speakers outside all the time, rather store them inside. This will definitely extend the life of your valuable outdoor wireless speakers. If you really need to leave it outside all the time, try to find a spot where it can be hidden from the most harsh weather conditions.

Stereo
Not all wireless speaker systems include two speakers to give you a stereo experience. Especially the outdoor wireless speakers are sold as single units. This can easily be overcome by purchasing two speakers, obviously doubling the price.

Legislation
Wireless speakers use RF signals which may interfere with other RF devices. Make sure that the frequency range is legal in your country. If it is sold by a reputable dealer in your country, this should not be a problem. Wireless speakers technology is still a fairly new technology and some still have issues to be sorted out. So you have to do your shopping wisely.
